What I Want My Son to Inherit Is Not the Story

A story is something that happened to you. An inheritance is something you hand over on purpose. Ryan Nichols on fatherhood, Genesis 50:20 and what a boy actually gets.

There is a boy coming.

I think about that at strange hours. Not the nursery. Not the name. I think about what he is going to inherit from me, and how much of it I actually get to choose.

Some of it I do not choose. He is going to be able to type my name into a search bar. He is going to find headlines. He is going to find people who decided who I was without ever shaking my hand. That is already written and I cannot unwrite it.

Here is where I keep landing.

The story is not the inheritance.

The part I do not control

I spent a long stretch of my life being defined by the worst week anybody ever read about me. When you live under that, you start to believe the file is the man. You start defending. You start explaining before anybody asked.

I do not want to hand a boy a defense file and call it a father.

The part I do control

What he can inherit is a habit.

He can inherit a man who gets up early. Who does the boring work. Who answers the phone. Who finishes what he started even when nobody clapped for the first half of it.

He can inherit a man who does not lie to him. Not the polished version. Not the flattering version. When he asks me hard questions someday, and he will, he is going to get a straight answer and an honest look at what it cost.

He can inherit a man who kept his word to small people. That is the real test. Anybody can keep their word to somebody who has the power to hurt them.

Genesis 50:20 is not a bumper sticker

You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.

I used to read that verse like a trophy. Like the ending.

It is not the ending. It is a job description.

The verse does not say the evil was not evil. It says something got built out of it. Something got built by somebody. Every day I do not build, that verse is just a nice sentence on a wall.

So here is how I read it now. Whatever was done to me only turns into good if I keep showing up and turning it into something. That is work. That is a Tuesday. That is answering the emails and writing the article and packing the box.

What a Sunday is for

I am not preaching at anybody. I am telling you what a quiet Sunday morning does for a man who lost a stack of them.

It slows the engine down. It makes you take inventory. It reminds you that the loud part of your life was never the important part.

And it makes you ask the only question that matters when there is a child on the way.

If he grows up to be exactly like me, is that good news?

I want the answer to be yes. Not because of what I survived. Because of what I built after.

The bottom line

A story is something that happened to you.

An inheritance is something you hand over on purpose.

I cannot go back and change what he will find one day.

I can make sure that by the time he is old enough to go looking, there is a whole lot more to find.
