Somebody Called Me Before They Called Anybody Else
When you survive something in public, strangers start calling. Here is what I can actually give them, and what I finally stopped trying to carry.

A man called me and the first thing out of his mouth was that he did not know who else to call.
Not that I was the right person. Not that I was qualified. That he was out of numbers.
I know that call from the inside. I have made it. You do not dial a stranger and ask for help until everybody who was supposed to be there has already stopped answering.
So I shut up and listened.
Here is the part nobody warns you about. When you come out the other side of something hard and you say so in public, people start finding you. Not a flood. A trickle. One at a time. And every single one of them is in the worst week of their life, and every single one of them thinks you have something you probably do not have.
I used to try to fix it.
That was pride wearing a helping shirt.
A man calls you at nine at night and you want to be the answer, because being the answer feels like proof that the hard years bought something. So you promise more than you can carry. You take the whole weight of his situation onto your own back. Then you lie there at two in the morning owning an outcome that was never yours to own.
I cannot give anybody an outcome.
I can give them order.
That is the honest version of what I have. I can take a mess and put it in a line. I can tell a man what I would do next if I were standing where he is standing. I can tell him the truth about what I do not know. That is a real thing and it is worth something, and it is also not salvation, and I have had to learn to say both of those sentences in the same breath.
What I actually do now
I answer.
That is most of it. I pick up, and I let the man talk until he runs out of the version he rehearsed and gets to the real one. That usually takes about eleven minutes. Then I ask what he has in writing. Then I ask what has to stay private. Then I tell him the smallest useful next thing.
And then I let it go.
Not because I stopped caring. Because carrying a man's outcome is not the same as helping him, and because somebody who takes on more weight than God handed him is going to drop somebody eventually. Probably the one who needed him most.
The part that is faith and not technique
I spent a long stretch where nobody was coming.
I prayed in rooms where the prayer did not seem to go anywhere. I asked for help from people who had every reason to give it and did not give it. What I came out of that with is not bitterness, most days. It is a very plain conviction that the call getting answered matters more than the answer being brilliant.
Somebody answered for me. Late, and imperfectly, and not the person I expected.
But somebody did.
So when the phone rings now I pick it up. Not because I am the fix. Because being reachable is the one thing I can actually guarantee, and there is a version of a man out there tonight who has run all the way to the bottom of his contact list, and the difference between the worst night of his life and the second worst night of his life might be nothing more than somebody saying hello.
I am not the well.
I am a man with a bucket. The bucket works.
Do not threaten anyone. Do not harass anyone. Do not contact anyone in my name. If you are the one with nobody left to call, call. If you know somebody sitting in that spot tonight, be the one who answers.
