Nothing Out On That Water Knows My Name

Nothing out on that water knows my name.

That is exactly why I go.

There is a window in an East Texas morning, before the heat gets serious, when the water goes flat and the whole world shuts up. No signal worth having. No comment section. No court date. Just a line in the water and a man waiting on it.

I could not do that for a long time.

Stillness used to mean something bad was coming

For years, sitting still was not rest. Sitting still was a cell. It meant something was about to happen to me and there was nothing I could do about it. My body learned that lesson hard, and it did not unlearn it the day the door opened.

So when people told me to relax, I did not hear kindness. I heard a warning.

That is the part nobody explains about coming home. The thing is over and your nervous system did not get the memo.

Fishing is not restful. Fishing is a job.

Here is what surprised me.

Fishing is not doing nothing. Fishing is paying attention. Where the shade is. Where the bait moved. What the wind just changed. You are alert the entire time.

You are just alert in a way that costs you nothing.

That was the bridge. I could not go from full alert to zero. No man can do that on command. But I could go from braced to steady. Same engine. Different job.

If you cannot rest, quit trying to rest. Find something that gives your attention a place to go that is not a threat.

The water does not negotiate

The other thing the lake taught me is that you cannot force the outcome.

You can pick the right spot. You can rig it right. You can get there before the sun. And then you wait. That is the entire deal.

I spent years trying to force an outcome. Force a ruling. Force people to look at the record. Force the truth to land on the day I wanted it to land.

You cannot force it.

You can only be in the right spot, prepared, and keep showing up on the mornings nothing is biting.

Genesis 50:20 says what was meant for evil, God meant for good. People put that on a coffee mug. It is not a coffee mug. It is a long game. You do not get to see the good on the day the evil happens. You only get to see it if you are still standing there later.

Still standing there later is the whole assignment.

Why I am writing this down

I have a son coming.

One day I am going to load a boy in a truck before daylight and put a rod in his hand.

What I want him to learn out there is not how to catch a fish. Anybody can pick that up off a video in ten minutes.

I want him to learn that a man can be still without being afraid.

That is the one thing I did not have. I am not handing him my alarm system. I would rather hand him a quiet morning and let him find out it is safe.

If you are the guy who cannot sit down

You know who you are.

You came out of something. Maybe a deployment. Maybe a hospital. Maybe a courtroom. And ever since, quiet feels like the second before the hit lands.

Find the thing that gives you a job and peace at the same time. Water. Woods. A shop. A garden. A jobsite. It does not have to be silent. It has to be yours, and nothing in it can be allowed to need an answer out of you.

Then go before you feel ready. You are not going to feel ready. Ready is not coming.

Go anyway.

I am still learning this one. I am not writing to you from the far side of it. I am writing to you from about a hundred yards up the same trail.

Send this to the man you were thinking about the whole time you were reading it. He is not going to ask for it. Send it anyway.
