The Loudest Thing In My House Right Now Is Quiet

Peace did not arrive like a parade. It arrived like a Tuesday. On learning to sit still, the water at first light, and the son on the way.

I woke up this morning and nothing was wrong.

That used to scare me more than the bad days did.

For a long stretch of my life, noise was the normal. Doors. Voices. Lights that never went all the way off. You learn to sleep with one ear up. You learn to read a room in two seconds. You learn to keep your body ready for something that has not happened yet.

Then one day the noise stops and your body does not get the message.

That is the part nobody warns you about. Peace does not arrive like a parade. It arrives like a Tuesday. Coffee. A truck that needs gas. And a nervous system still standing post over a threat that left the building a long time ago.

I am learning to let it be quiet.

What the water taught me

Most mornings I try to get on the water early.

Not for the fish. I have caught enough fish to be honest about that.

I go because the water does not need anything from me. It does not want a statement. It does not want my side of the story. It does not care what anybody posted last night. It just sits there being flat and gold and completely uninterested in my opinion.

Twenty minutes of that and my shoulders come down an inch.

There is a version of me that would have called that a wasted morning. That version of me was also miserable. He thought rest was something you earned after the war was over, and the war was never over, so he never rested.

I do not live there anymore.

A son is coming

I have a son on the way.

I think about that at strange hours. Not the big dramatic thoughts either. Small ones. Whether I know how to be calm on a bad day. Whether the man he meets is the man I have been building or the man I used to be.

Here is what I have decided.

He is not going to inherit my flinch. He is not going to grow up in a house where every noise is a threat and every conversation is a hearing. He is going to get a father who can sit still.

That is not a small goal. For me that might be the whole thing.

The verse I keep coming back to

Genesis 50:20. As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.

I do not read that verse as a trophy. I read it as a job description.

It does not say the evil was not evil. It says the evil did not get the last word. Something got made out of it. And the making is not automatic. You have to show up for it. You have to do the boring work of healing on a Tuesday when nobody is watching and nothing is on fire.

That is where I am right now. The boring work. The good part.

If you are still in the loud part

Some of you reading this are still in the noise.

You are still bracing. You are still reading the room. You are still waiting for the other shoe because the other shoe has always dropped before.

I am not going to tell you to get over it. I am going to tell you the quiet is real, it does come, and your body will eventually believe it. Mine is starting to.

Do not rush it. Do not perform it. Do not announce that you are healed before you are.

Just get on the water. Or the porch. Or the tailgate. Twenty minutes where nothing is required of you.

That is not laziness. That is repair.

What I want you to do

I am not asking you for anything today. No signup. No offer.

Send this to one person who has been bracing for a long time.

That is it. Just send it. Let them know the quiet exists.
