Some Days the Win Is the Thing I Did Not Send

Ryan Nichols on the one rule he uses now: if he writes it in heat, it sits until morning. On PTSD, restraint, and why Genesis 50:20 is something you find out later.

There is a version of me that answers everything.

He is fast. He is certain. He is exhausted.

I was that man for a long time. Somebody said something about me and I felt it in my chest before I finished reading it. Then the thumbs started moving. Then the paragraph got longer. Then it was one in the morning and I was still holding my phone like it owed me something.

I do not live that way anymore.

Not because I got soft. Because I got tired in a way that sleep does not fix.

Here is the rule I actually use now.

If I write something in heat, it sits until morning.

That is it. That is the whole system.

Most of the time morning does the editing for me. I read it back and I can see the fear underneath it. Not righteousness. Fear. The part of me that still thinks if I explain it clearly enough, one more time, somebody out there is finally going to say out loud that they got me wrong.

They are not going to say it. And I do not need them to.

That took me years to learn and it cost more than I want to write down.

I am not telling you to swallow things. I am not telling anybody to be quiet. I built this whole platform so I would never have to be quiet again. There is a difference between speaking and bleeding in public because somebody poked you.

Speaking is on purpose. Bleeding is a reaction.

One builds a record. The other builds a habit.

I have PTSD. I do not say that for sympathy and I am not going to dress it up. It means my body reacts before my mind gets a vote. Somebody shuts a door hard and my shoulders are already up. A message hits my phone and something in my gut drops before I read a word of it.

For a long time I thought the goal was to stop feeling that.

The goal is not to stop feeling it. The goal is to stop obeying it.

Feel it. Name it. Then go do the next right thing anyway.

That is the whole discipline. It is boring. It works.

Some mornings the next right thing is coffee and a boat ramp before the sun is all the way up. Some mornings it is a spreadsheet. Some mornings it is putting my hand on a wall and breathing until my heart stops running a drill it was never asked to run.

None of that is content. None of that gets shared. Nobody is clapping.

But it is the actual work.

Genesis 50:20 says what they meant for evil, God meant for good. I have quoted it so many times it started sounding like a slogan, and I had to go back and sit with it again.

Joseph did not say that in the pit.

He said it years later, standing in a room he had to survive his way into.

Which means the verse is not a feeling you get on the bad day. It is a thing you find out later, if you are still standing. And you only get to still be standing if you keep making small unglamorous choices on the days nobody is watching.

Do not send it tonight.

Go to bed.

If it still needs saying in the morning, say it better, say it once, and go back to work.

I have got a son coming. He is going to watch how I handle being talked about long before he ever understands what was said.

I would rather he learn stillness from me than learn it the way I did.

So today the win is small.

I wrote it. I did not send it. I made breakfast.

That counts.
