I Can Forgive You Without Handing You the Keys
Forgiveness and trust are two different transactions. One I can make today. The other gets built one kept promise at a time, and nobody can hand it to you.

Somebody asked me a while back how I can say I have forgiven people and still keep my distance from some of them.
Fair question. Here is the answer.
Forgiveness and trust are two different transactions.
Forgiveness is a decision
Forgiveness happens on my side of the table. It does not require the other person to show up, apologize, explain, or even know about it. It costs them nothing at all.
It costs me the thing I was carrying. That is the whole trade.
I can do that today. I can do it this afternoon, sitting in a truck in a parking lot, with nobody else involved and nobody else told.
Trust is a record
Trust is not a feeling and it is not a gift. It is a record. It gets built out of behavior, in small things, over a stretch of time long enough that it stops being a performance.
There is no way to hand somebody a record.
You can forgive a man in an afternoon. Nobody on earth can trust a man in an afternoon.
Welding those two together is what wrecks people
Here is what I see over and over.
A person gets hurt. Somebody tells them they need to forgive. And in their head, forgiving means going back. It means handing the keys back over. It means acting like none of it happened.
So they refuse. They are not stupid and they are not going back.
Then they carry it. For years. The weight sits right where it is, on the person who did not earn it, while the one who caused it sleeps just fine.
That is the trap. It is built entirely out of one bad definition.
What the story actually says
People quote Genesis 50:20 at me a lot. Usually as a way of telling me to look on the bright side.
That is not what it says.
Joseph did not tell his brothers it was fine. He did not tell them it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He told them straight out that they meant evil against him. He named it, to their faces, with no softening in it.
And in the same breath he said God meant it for good.
Then he fed them.
He never pretended the pit did not happen. He just refused to let it be the last word.
That is the whole model. Name it honestly. Refuse to let it own you. Go do the next right thing.
What it looks like on a Tuesday
I will pray for you. I will not put you on the account.
I will speak well of you. I will not leave you alone with what I am building.
I will pick up the phone. I will not pretend none of it happened.
None of that is bitterness. That is an accurate file.
There is a difference between the two, and the difference is whether I want anything bad for you. I do not. I have not wanted anything bad for anybody in a long time. That took work and it is the best work I ever did.
The door is not welded shut
Trust can be rebuilt. It gets rebuilt the same way it got built the first time. One kept promise at a time. In small things. Where people can see it. Over a stretch long enough that nobody could fake it that long.
If somebody starts doing that, I will notice. I notice everything now.
But I am not going to pretend the record says something it does not say just to get there faster. Neither should you.
Forgive, because you need it more than they do.
Keep the keys, until the record says otherwise.
Those two things have never once been in conflict.
