Ryan's Take

The Speaker Vote Gets Counted Before It Gets Cast

Democrats may hold the Texas House. The Speaker race is already being counted in private. East Texas should see the list before January 12.

The election ended Tuesday. The next fight started Tuesday night. And most of it is happening where you cannot see it.

Plain English summary

Texas voters picked 150 House members on November 3. Those 150 members now pick one Speaker. The Speaker runs the House. The Speaker decides which bills move and which bills die.

According to the Texas Tribune, Democrats are looking at an 83 to 67 or 84 to 66 House majority. Two Democrats have already launched campaigns for Speaker. Some Republicans are reportedly talking on Zoom about backing one of them.

It takes 76 votes to win the gavel. The session starts January 12.

That vote gets counted long before it gets cast. This is the record of how that works, and why East Texas should be watching.

Why it matters

You did not vote for Speaker. Nobody in Texas did.

You voted for one House member. That member casts one vote for Speaker. That one vote decides who controls the calendar, the committees, and the bills that reach the floor.

The Speaker race is where your vote either carries into Austin or gets traded away in a phone call.

Same Capitol. Same deal-making. New names on the doors.

DOCUMENTED INFERENCE. The Texas Tribune reports a Democratic majority of 83 to 67 or 84 to 66, the largest since 1993, with several flips decided by a few hundred votes. The range tells you the count was not settled when the story ran. Treat the final number as unconfirmed until the canvass. Source: Texas Tribune, Nov. 5, 2026.

DOCUMENTED INFERENCE. The Tribune reports two declared candidates: Rep. Senfronia Thompson of Houston, first elected in 1972, and Rep. Eddie Morales Jr. of Eagle Pass. Same source.

NEEDS AUTHENTICATION. The Tribune relays a report that a group of Republican House members held a Zoom call about backing a Democrat in a power-sharing deal. A GOP source claims at least five Republicans back Thompson. Her camp claims as many as 65 members are ready. The Tribune says it has not seen the list. None of those counts are confirmed.

DOCUMENTED INFERENCE. Rep. Brent Money, a Greenville Republican, posted publicly that there is "no scenario" in which he votes for a Democrat Speaker. Reported by the Texas Tribune, same source.

What Ryan says

RYAN STATEMENT. I ran for House District 7 because I believe the people of East Texas deserve to know how their vote gets spent in Austin. Not after the fact. Before.

The Speaker race is the first vote of every session. It is also the vote most members want you to forget about. Pledge cards. Back rooms. Zoom calls. A list nobody will show the press.

I do not care which party is holding the list. I want to see it.

Whoever sits in the HD7 seat on January 12 owes East Texas one plain answer. Who are you voting for, and what did you get for it?

Show me the evidence. Show me the list. Show me the deal.

What this does not prove

This does not prove any Republican has agreed to back a Democrat for Speaker. That claim rests on unnamed sources.

This does not prove the final House count. Close races can move in the canvass.

This does not prove what any East Texas member will do on January 12. Nobody has cast a vote yet.

This does not say anything about any candidate's character. It is about process.

What it does prove

It proves the Speaker is chosen by 150 people, not by 30 million.

It proves the count is already underway, two months before the session.

It proves that, as of this reporting, nobody doing the counting has published a list.

And it proves that the only way you will know how your member voted is if you are watching when it happens.

The bottom line

The election was the part you could see. The Speaker race is the part they hope you miss. Same county, same Capitol, same question.

Who did your member vote for? And what did East Texas get for it?

The record does not lie. But someone has to read it.
