My son was born 561 days after the pardon.
I did the math on purpose. I wanted to know exactly how far on the other side of it he landed.
The line on the calendar
The numbers are already on this site. I was taken on January 18, 2021, and held across ten facilities until the pardon on January 20, 2025. That is 1,463 days.
Thomas David was born on August 4, 2026. His name and his birth date are the details I have chosen to make public. Everything else about him stays off this site.
Days held, and days from the pardon to my son's birth
Not one of his days was spent with me behind a door.
What that means for the comeback
When I started writing about the road back, I thought of it as a story with a before and an after.
He changes the shape of that.
He was born on the far side of all of it. He will never know the version of me that was counting days. The only father he gets is the one who is rebuilding.
That is a gift. It is also a job.
The job
I used to think the comeback was something I owed to myself. Get the work back. Get the name back. Prove them wrong.
That is not the job anymore. Or it is not the main one.
The main job is to make the after real. Not a highlight reel. Real.
That means the ordinary days have to hold. The work has to be honest and steady. The money has to be clean. The temper has to stay under control, and when it does not, I have to own it out loud. None of that makes a good post. All of it is what he will actually grow up inside.
When he asks
Some day he will ask about the 1,463 days.
I have thought about how I want to answer. Not with a war story. Not with a grudge. Not with a cleaned up legend where his father was never wrong about anything.
With the record.
That is part of why I keep it the way I do. Dates, documents, receipts. When he is old enough to want the truth, it will be there, and he will not have to take my word for it. He can read it and make up his own mind.
That is the one inheritance from those years I am glad to hand him. Not the hurt. The habit of writing down what is true.
If you are rebuilding with somebody watching
Maybe it is a kid. Maybe it is a younger brother, or somebody at work who knows where you have been.
They do not need you to tell them about the bottom. They need you to show them what the climb looks like on a regular Tuesday.
Make the after real. That is the whole job.
Genesis 50:20. What was meant for harm, God turned toward good. Some of that good is 561 days old on the far side of the line, and counting.
