Amazon Gets My Book Last. My Readers Get It First.
Fighting Shadows sells direct from my own site before it ever reaches Amazon. The real pre-order counts, why I sell direct, and one price mismatch I found.

When my book comes out, Amazon gets it last.
That is not an accident and it is not spite. It is the plan, and it is written on the book page in plain words: pre-order direct, here, before the book goes to Amazon.
I want to explain why, because it is the same lesson I learned rebuilding everything else.
The first buyers come to my house
The pre-order page says founding editions ship before the book ever reaches Amazon. Every edition is sold right there, through Stripe, on a site I own.
There are three ways in. The Early Release Digital Edition is $29.99. The Signed Paperback is $79 and includes the digital edition. The Founding Supporter Edition is $250, signed and numbered, limited to 250 copies.
This morning the page showed where that stands.
Founding Supporter Edition, copies
Those are small numbers. I am putting them up anyway. A count you only show when it is big is not a count. It is an ad.
Why direct, in my own words
The book page answers the question straight in its FAQ: buying direct funds the work directly and gets you founding access before the book reaches Amazon.
I wrote the reason on that same page.
I spent years with other people controlling what was said about me and who got to hear it. I am not handing the first relationship with my readers to anybody else.
When you sell through somebody else's store first, they get the customer. They get the email. They get to decide whether the next thing you make ever shows up in front of that person again.
When you sell from your own house first, you get to write back. The pre-order page lays that out: you get an emailed confirmation right away, then writing, editing, and printing milestones land in your inbox and on the Updates page.
That is a relationship, not a transaction.
What I am not promising
There is still no locked ship date. The book page FAQ says so out loud, and says every milestone gets posted as the manuscript, editing, and printing schedule is finalized. It also says you get a full refund anytime before your edition ships.
I would rather sell fewer copies on honest terms than more copies on a date I cannot keep.
One thing on my own site does not match
While I was pulling these numbers I found a mismatch, and I am not going to write around it.
The book promo on my homepage says early access from $17.76. The book page and the pre-order page both list the lowest edition at $29.99 today. Those cannot both be the entry price. The price that counts is the one on the pre-order page at checkout, and the homepage line goes on my fix list.
Why this belongs in the comeback ledger
A few years ago I did not control a single word that went out about me. The book covers the D.C. jail and what came before and after it, and it is going to my readers first, from my own site, before any retailer touches it.
That is not a comeback. That is building forward.
Sharing this is the biggest help. Put it in front of one more person.
You made it to the end
Most people quit at the headline. You didn’t.
So don’t stop here. Pick one.
