A jail employee suggested Ryan might be hiding bedding. His wife says he was hiding nothing and is being denied basic supplies.

October 17, 2026 • Advocacy and review of supplied call transcripts

Ryan Nichols needs help getting his reported conditions addressed now.

His wife says Ryan has told her he is freezing, sleeping on cold concrete and being refused basic bedding. She says he was hiding nothing. She also reports that he has PTSD and wants someone to check his welfare and address his medical needs.

Sleeping on cold concrete without adequate warmth is unacceptable. Harrison County should physically check Ryan, address his needs and document what has been provided.

Three supplied call transcripts show why his family is demanding answers.

A report that he was freezing—and a suggestion that he hid the bedding

In one call, the caller relayed the family’s concern:

Caller: “His wife is saying that he is freezing…”

Staff asserted that Ryan had bedding, explaining:

Jail staff: “When anybody gets a mat, they always have a blanket and sheet. So he does have those things.”

Then came this question:

Jail staff: “Is it a possibility that maybe he kept them out of [sight] to support his claim?”

Ryan’s wife rejects that suggestion. She says he was hiding nothing and told her staff would not provide what he needed.

The employee’s question introduced a suspicion about Ryan’s honesty. The transcript contains no description of that employee personally inspecting his bedding or checking an issue log.

A person reporting that he is freezing deserves a prompt, documented check. Harrison County should identify who checked Ryan, when they checked him and what bedding he actually had.

Repeated calls and a request still seeking confirmation

In another supplied transcript, the caller described repeated attempts to obtain that confirmation:

Caller: “They said they were going to have someone lay eyes on him to make sure that he had a blanket and the things that he was supposed to be assigned at booking. And I haven’t heard a call back and can’t get anyone to answer.”

The caller reported technical problems and disconnected calls. The third call reached dispatch and jail staff, followed by a transfer to a lieutenant’s voicemail.

The message left there included:

Caller: “We just need some answers, sir.”

The family believes inquiries about Ryan are being avoided. The supplied calls establish the caller’s repeated complaints and the transfer to voicemail; they do not establish deliberate blocking or what happened afterward. The unresolved demand is urgent: confirm that someone has personally checked him and addressed his reported conditions.

His family raised a mental-health concern

The caller also said:

Caller: “We wanted him checked out medically because he has PTSD and he has not been evaluated by medical yet.”

That is the caller’s report, not a medical-record finding. It is a serious concern that deserves a documented response.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards’ January 5, 2026 compilation requires admission health screening and an immediate mental-health/suicide-prevention screening instrument. Its rules also address referrals and documented supervision under the applicable plan. The calls do not establish which steps occurred for Ryan. The jail should confirm the screening, referrals and follow-up to those authorized to receive that information. Chapter 273, pages 196–197.

June disposition. October revocation. Explain the authority.

The family reports that the relevant charge was disposed of in June, followed by a bond revocation in October. In a supplied call, staff identified a $15,000 cash bond, while saying the court information was not in front of them.

The caller put the allegation plainly:

Caller: “Y’all have violated his constitutional rights.”

His family is challenging the lawfulness of his detention.

Show the June disposition, the signed revocation or holding order, the alleged violation and the relevant hearing record. Explain every current basis for holding him.

Those orders have not been supplied for this review, so their legal effect remains unresolved. That makes obtaining and matching them essential.

We need help getting answers

Please share these concerns and help bring them to reporters and officials responsible for jail oversight.

The immediate demands are clear:

  • Personally check Ryan’s welfare and address his reported lack of warmth and bedding.
  • Confirm that his health concerns have reached appropriate staff and that necessary follow-up is occurring.
  • Produce the records establishing the authority for his detention.

Ryan needs a documented response now. Harrison County needs to answer.

Source note: Quotes are excerpts from three supplied text transcripts; “Caller” replaces identifying details. Punctuation and obvious transcription spelling are normalized, with the bracketed correction shown. Original audio, call dates and staff identities have not been independently authenticated. Earlier Ryan reporting described a blanket; the newer family account describes missing bedding. The timing and issue history remain unresolved. Section 277.8 of the dated TCJS standards distinguishes housing from holding/detoxification cells, so placement matters to the applicable bedding rule. The current standards directory links to the current rules.
