My Body Knew the Date Before I Did

Some mornings I wake up braced and nothing happened. Anniversary reactions, what I stopped arguing with, and the three small things that carry the day.

There are days I wake up already braced.

Nothing happened. Nobody called. The coffee is the same coffee. And I am standing in my own kitchen with my shoulders up around my ears like something is about to come through the door.

It took me a long time to figure out what that was.

It is the calendar.

The body keeps its own record

I spent years learning to notice things fast. That was the work. You read a room, you read water, you read weather, you read the way a man is standing before he says anything. You get good at it because being slow costs somebody.

That does not switch off when the season ends.

So the part of me that learned to scan for trouble is still scanning. And it does not only scan the room. It scans the date.

I will be irritable for no reason. Tight in the chest for no reason. Short with people who did nothing. And then I look at the calendar and understand that my body got there before my head did. It remembered something and started getting ready, and it did not bother to tell me what.

That is not weakness. That is a system doing exactly what it was trained to do, on a day when the training is not needed.

What I stopped doing

I used to argue with it.

I would tell myself nothing was wrong. That this was stupid. That I had no reason to feel like this. And then I would get mad at myself for feeling it anyway.

That is two fights instead of one. The first fight is with the day. The second fight is with me. The second one I always lost.

I do not do that anymore.

Now I say it out loud, even if it is only to the truck. Something about today. I do not know what yet.

That one sentence takes most of the air out of it. Not because it fixes anything. Because naming a thing stops it from running the whole house while pretending to be nothing.

What I do instead

Three things. None of them impressive.

I move. Not a workout. A walk, the yard, the water, something with my hands. A braced body wants a job. Give it one that is not worry.

I tell one person. Not a speech. Just, today is heavy, I do not need anything. Carrying it alone is what turns a hard day into a bad week.

I keep the smallest promise on my list. One. The dishes, the email, the thing I said I would do. On a day when I do not trust my own head, the only argument that works is evidence.

The part I will not pretty up

Some of those days still take the whole day.

I am not going to write the version where I figured it out and now it is fine. It is not always fine. There are dates on my calendar that will probably cost me something every year for the rest of my life. I have made a kind of peace with that, and the peace is not the same thing as it being gone.

What I believe is that God did not waste any of it. Not the years. Not the damage. Not the days I could not explain to anybody. He meant it for good.

That is not a feeling I have on those mornings. It is a thing I decided was true, and I hold onto it on the mornings when I do not feel one single thing.

Feelings are weather. What you decided is the house.

If this is you

If you woke up braced today and you cannot name why, you are not losing it. Your body is keeping a record your calendar does not show you. That is common, it is treatable, and it is not a character flaw.

Move. Tell one person. Keep one promise.

And if it is more than a heavy day, if it is weeks, if it is getting darker instead of lighter, talk to somebody who does this for a living. That is not surrender. That is maintenance. I would not run a truck ten years with no oil change and then act surprised.

Tomorrow is a different date.
