An Anaconda in the Sky Over Lake O' the Pines

Sunrise on Lake O' the Pines with my dad. A long line of birds came across the water like an anaconda in the sky.

Recorded Friday morning, October 9, 2026, on Lake O' the Pines.

"That is an anaconda. Look, it's an anaconda. It's going through the sky."

That was the call on the boat.

Sunrise on Lake O' the Pines. Me and my dad, out running jug lines.

Then the birds showed up.

Feathers everywhere

Before we ever saw them fly, the water around the boat gave them away.

"That's feathers over here."

"Feathers everywhere."

"Maybe they just came and roosted over here."

"Could be."

They all fly

"They all fly to this end of the lake and then they all fly."

"There they go again."

A long white line of birds came low across the lake, strung out in front of the tree line. Stretching. Bending. Moving like one animal.

"Oh my gosh, look at this. Daddy, look at them."

The anaconda

That's how it got the name.

One long line, snaking through the sky over the water.

"They're bad to the bone, ain't they?"

"Yeah, they are."

Two cameras on the boat again. A GoPro down low on the side and my phone in my hand. You see the same morning from both angles.

What we said on the boat

From the video, word for word:

  • "That's feathers over here."
  • "Feathers everywhere."
  • "Maybe they just came and roosted over here."
  • "Could be."
  • "They all fly to this end of the lake and then they all fly."
  • "There they go again."
  • "Oh my gosh, look at this. Daddy, look at them."
  • "That is an anaconda. Look, it's an anaconda. It's going through the sky."
  • "They're bad to the bone, ain't they?"
  • "Yeah, they are."
