Smith County voted red again. Every local Republican won. But the margin moved ten points in four years, and that is the story nobody wants to say out loud.

Plain English summary

Texas flipped this week. Smith County did not.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph reported Saturday that every Republican federal and state candidate on the Smith County ballot held over 61% of the vote. U.S. Rep. Nathaniel Moran, State Sen. Bryan Hughes and State Rep. Daniel Alders were all re-elected. Austin Luce (R) won the Precinct 2 commissioner seat over Democrat Dustin Stephens.

Then the number that matters. Greg Abbott carried Smith County with 64% this year, according to the same report. In 2022 he carried it with 74%.

Same county. Same governor. Ten points gone.

Why it matters

East Texas is the firewall. Everybody says so.

When the state went one way, Smith County went the other. That is real, and the people who knocked doors here earned it.

But a firewall that loses ten points in one cycle is not a firewall. It is a warning light.

If you only read the headline, you think nothing changed here. The record says something did.

The receipt

Here is what was reported, and how solid each piece is.

  • DOCUMENTED INFERENCE (Tyler Morning Telegraph, Nov. 7, 2026): Smith County had 168,079 registered voters. About 53%, or 89,785 people, cast a ballot.
  • DOCUMENTED INFERENCE (Tyler Morning Telegraph): 73% of those voters voted early, Oct. 19 to 30. The county reported 21,075 Election Day voters.
  • DOCUMENTED INFERENCE (Tyler Morning Telegraph): Turnout was up 17% over the 2022 general election.
  • DOCUMENTED INFERENCE (Tyler Morning Telegraph): Abbott took 64% in Smith County in 2026, down from 74% against Beto O'Rourke in 2022.
  • DOCUMENTED INFERENCE (Tyler Morning Telegraph): In Van Zandt County, every federal and state Republican held over 68%, per that county's unofficial report.
  • FACT: These are unofficial numbers until the canvass. The county's own results page is linked below. Check it yourself.

Smith County GOP Chairman David Stein, as quoted by the paper:

"It is no secret, statewide and national elections were not what we Republicans were anticipating."

And:

"What I don't want to take away from is the overwhelming success we once again enjoyed in Smith County."

Both of those things can be true at the same time. That is the point.

What Ryan says

RYAN STATEMENT:

I am not here to cry about Tuesday. I am here to read the numbers.

Smith County won. Good. Congratulations to the folks who worked for it.

Now look again.

Turnout went up. The Republican share went down. More people showed up, and a bigger slice of them voted the other way at the top of the ticket.

That does not happen because East Texans woke up and changed who they are. It happens when people feel the price of groceries, gas, diesel and insurance and they do not hear anybody in charge talking about it like they mean it.

You can win a county by more than 25 points and still be losing the argument.

The party that says "we held East Texas" and stops there is going to wake up in 2028 with a smaller cushion. The party that says "we lost ten points, show me where and why" might keep it.

I want the precinct numbers. I want to know which boxes moved. I want to know if it was turnout, crossover, or people who just left the top line blank.

Show me the evidence. Then fix it.

What this does not prove

  • It does not prove Smith County is turning blue. Every Republican on the ballot still cleared 61%, as reported.
  • It does not prove why the margin moved. Inflation, the war, tariffs, candidate fatigue: those are arguments, not receipts.
  • It does not prove the final numbers. These are unofficial until the canvass.
  • It does not prove anything about any one candidate's record. A governor's margin is not a local official's report card.

What it does prove

  • DOCUMENTED INFERENCE: The top of the Republican ticket lost about ten points in Smith County between 2022 and 2026, by the paper's reported figures.
  • DOCUMENTED INFERENCE: That happened in a year when turnout went up, not down.
  • FACT: Smith County publishes its own results. Nobody has to take a newspaper's word or mine. Go read it.

The bottom line

Smith County held the line.

The line moved.

Celebrate the win. Then go get the precinct data, because the next fight starts in the boxes that slipped.

The record does not lie. It just waits for somebody to read it.

Do not threaten anyone. Do not harass anyone. Do not contact anyone in my name. Read it. Share it. Send receipts, evidence, witnesses. Put eyes on the record.
