Nothing I Caught Today Went in the Truck
I went fishing and kept nothing. Why a man who scores his own day needs one hour a week that produces no evidence at all, and why rest is a command and not a reward.

I went fishing this week and I did not keep a thing.
Caught them, looked at them, put them back.
Drove home with an empty cooler and a wet shirt and I felt better than I have felt in a month.
That should not be complicated. For me it was.
I measure everything
Somewhere in the last two years I turned into a man who scores his own day.
How many pages. How many calls. How many things shipped. How much came in. Did the record get bigger today or did it sit still.
That habit saved me. I am not going to pretend it did not. When you are climbing out of a hole, a scoreboard is the only thing that tells you the shovel is working.
But a scoreboard does not know when to stop.
It follows you to the truck. It follows you to the table. It sits down next to you on a Saturday and asks what you produced.
The water does not ask
Here is the thing about standing in a boat with a line in the water.
Nobody out there needs a status update.
The fish do not care what my name brings up when you type it into a search bar. The water does not know anything about me and it is not going to look it up.
For that hour my head is not building a case, not drafting a reply, not running a list. It is watching a line.
I have tried to get that same quiet other ways. Sitting still does not do it. Sleeping does not do it, not most nights. Praying does it sometimes, and the times it does not, I keep praying anyway.
But water does it every time.
Rest is not a reward
I grew up on the idea that you earn your rest. Work first, then sit down.
That is fine until the work never ends. And mine does not end. There is always another page, another filing, another system to build, another thing somebody needs.
If rest is a reward, I will never qualify for it.
So I quit treating it like a reward.
Scripture does not say rest once you have finished. It puts rest in as a command, not a bonus. I think that is because God knew exactly what kind of man would need to be told.
I am that kind of man.
What I am actually doing out there
I am not relaxing. Let me be honest about that.
I am practicing.
I am practicing being a person who can exist for one hour without producing evidence of his own worth.
That is a hard skill for me. Harder than most of the work I do on a keyboard. My hands want a job. My head wants a list. Sitting in a boat doing something on purpose that will never show up on any ledger anywhere feels like cheating.
It is not cheating. It is maintenance.
A man who never stops does not become unstoppable. He becomes brittle. And brittle men break in front of the people who needed them not to.
I have a family. I have work. I have a record to keep building and a long way left to go.
None of that survives a brittle man.
If you are running on empty
You do not need a vacation. Most of us cannot take one.
You need one hour a week that generates nothing.
Not scrolling. Scrolling is not rest. Scrolling is work you do not get paid for.
Something with your hands and your eyes and no output. A field. A river. A garage. A porch with nobody on it but you.
Take the hour. Come back and do the work.
The work will still be there. It always is.
Nothing I caught went in the truck.
That was the whole point.
