I Changed One Number and I Cannot Tell You What It Did

I cut my X posting volume 75 percent on my own analytics ruling. Site traffic from X fell 90 percent in 48 hours. Here is why my own database still cannot tell me whether the two are connected.

Three days ago I cut my own posting volume by seventy five percent.

It was the right call on paper. I had the analytics in front of me and the ruling was mine.

Today I went looking for what it did.

I cannot tell you.

Not because the number is bad. Because I built a system that cannot answer the question I just asked it.

Read that again. That is the whole article.

The setup

I run a queue that posts to X off my own database. No scheduler subscription, no API keys, no monthly fee. It reads a table and it posts.

On September 20 that queue got corrected. It had drifted up to thirty posts a day against my own written rule of seven. I moved eleven hundred and sixty two rows back to seven a day. Nothing was deleted. Nothing was rewritten. Only the clock changed.

That correction was built on one kind of evidence: impressions and engagement rate out of X's own dashboard. Volume was up, engagement was down, so volume came down.

The receipt

Here is what my own database says happened next. These are posts that actually fired, counted in Central time, and site visits from X after every bot, every emulated browser, and every zero scroll session is stripped out.

FACT. Every number in that table came out of my own tables this morning.

Volume down about seventy five percent. Traffic from X down about ninety percent. Total human traffic cut in half in four days.

That looks like an answer. It is not one.

Why it is not an answer

Go back one week in the same table.

September 15 ran nine queue posts and sent thirteen people to the site.

September 16 ran nine queue posts and sent twenty five.

Nine posts did the work of thirty. Twice.

DOCUMENTED INFERENCE. If nine posts can send twenty five people and seven posts send three, then the number of posts is not what moved the needle. Something else did, and my data cannot see it.

What my data cannot see

Two things, and both of them matter more than the queue.

My own posts are invisible. When I post by hand, reply to somebody, or quote a thread, none of that lands in my database. The queue table only knows about the queue. My best posts have never been in it.

X's numbers live at X. Impressions, profile clicks, follows, all of it sits in a dashboard I do not own and cannot query. My site traffic sits in a database I do own. Nothing connects them. So I made a decision using one store and the outcome landed in a different store, and there is no row anywhere that ties the two together.

NEEDS AUTHENTICATION. I cannot prove the volume cut caused the traffic drop. I also cannot rule it out. That is an honest sentence and most people in my position would not write it.

What this actually proves

It proves something worse than a bad decision, and more useful.

You can run a real system, with real automation, firing on time with zero errors, and still be flying blind on the only question that pays. Mine did exactly that. Green lights all the way down. Zero failed posts. Zero overdue rows. Five months of approved content ready to go.

And I still cannot tell you whether the change I made three days ago helped me or cost me.

A dashboard that is healthy is not the same thing as a business that is measured.

What it does not prove

It does not prove the correction was wrong. Seven a day is still my ruling and the queue is still running it.

It does not prove X is dying or that the queue is worthless.

It does not prove four days is a trend. It is four days.

What it proves is that I asked a simple question of my own business and the answer was not in there.

What I am doing about it

I am not raising the rate to find out. Guessing twice does not make it science.

I am closing the gap instead. Every link that goes out gets tagged so the click comes back to me with the post that sent it. Manual posts get logged the same as queued ones. The outcome table and the decision table stop being strangers.

That is not a clever trick. That is the boring plumbing that turns an opinion into a measurement.

The part that applies to you

If you run a business, you are probably doing the same thing I just did.

You changed your hours, or your ad budget, or your follow up, or your price. You watched one number afterward. The number moved. You decided you were right.

Ask yourself the harder question. Where does the money actually land, and is that the same place you are looking?

If the answer is no, you do not have a marketing problem. You have a wiring problem, and it is fixable in an afternoon.

That is a lot of what I do for people now. Not a prettier site. A business that can answer a question about itself.

The bottom line

I made a decision I still believe was correct.

I cannot prove it.

That is not a reason to stop publishing the numbers. It is the reason to publish them.

Do not threaten anyone. Do not harass anyone. Do not contact anyone in my name.

Read it. Share it. If you run a business and you cannot answer this question about your own, send me what you have got and I will tell you where the wire is cut.
