William Chrestman — Olathe, Kansas. FACT: Before any of this, he served in the U.S. Army. He worked for years as a sheet metal worker in the Kansas City building trades. A veteran and a union tradesman — that is the man who existed long before a headline did. (Washington Post; NBC News) FACT: He was held in pretrial detention from his arrest in February 2021 all the way to sentencing in January 2024. Nearly three years away from home before a sentence was ever imposed. Whatever anyone thinks of the case, that is a long time. (NBC News) FACT: In October 2023 he pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding and threatening a federal officer. On January 12, 2024 he was sentenced to 4 years and 7 months. Prosecutors said he carried a wooden ax handle at the Capitol. We do not sand that off. It is the record, and the record stays. (DOJ; Washington Post) FACT: On January 20, 2025, President Trump issued clemency in January 6 cases. Anyone repeating an individual clemency status should confirm it against the docket first. NEEDS AUTHENTICATION: We have found no verified fundraiser, statement, or self-published account from Mr. Chrestman or his family. If one exists, send it and we will link it.
