William McCall Calhoun, Jr. is a small town trial lawyer from Americus, Georgia, the county seat of Sumter County. Americus is not a big city. In a town that size, the lawyer on the square is the lawyer everybody knows. THE MAN AND THE PRACTICE FACT: William McCall Calhoun, Jr. is a Georgia attorney. He was 57 at the time of the federal case. FACT: While the January 6 case was pending against him, Calhoun kept representing his clients, and the State Bar of Georgia took a wait and see approach rather than pulling him off their cases. Source: ABA Journal. He kept showing up for the people who hired him while the federal government was coming for him. That is in the record too. THE FIGHT FACT: Calhoun rejected the government's plea offer and took his case to trial. Source: WUSA9. FACT: He was found guilty at a bench trial on March 21, 2023, and sentenced on August 4, 2023 to 18 months of incarceration, 24 months of supervised release, $2,000 restitution, and a $170 special assessment. FACT: On October 28, 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals vacated his obstruction of an official proceeding conviction. The top count did not survive appeal. FACT: On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. FACT: On January 22, 2025, the court granted the government's motion to dismiss the case with prejudice. With prejudice means the government cannot bring it back. THE LICENSE FIGHT IS STILL LIVE FACT: In November 2023 the Supreme Court of Georgia suspended his law license pending the outcome of his federal appeal. Source: WALB. FACT: In January 2026 the Supreme Court of Georgia sent the discipline matter back to the State Bar, saying a public reprimand was not enough, and holding that a presidential pardon does not prevent discipline for the underlying conduct. WHAT THIS DOES NOT PROVE The obstruction conviction was vacated on appeal and the whole case was dismissed with prejudice.
