Thomas Carey is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania man, and his January 6 case closed on the single lowest charge the federal government brought out of that day. Start there, because the label matters. FACT: Thomas Carey was charged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, case 1:22-cr-375, on a complaint filed September 12, 2022. FACT: he was arrested September 15, 2022 in Pittsburgh. FACT: one week later, on September 22, 2022, he was released on his own personal recognizance. The government did not ask to hold him and the court did not hold him. FACT: Thomas Carey pleaded guilty in December 2022 to parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building. That is a Class B misdemeanor. A petty offense. FACT: on June 6, 2023 he was sentenced to 36 months of probation, a $10 special assessment and $500 in restitution. No incarceration. Sources: American Gulag case file 22-cr-375; CBS News Pittsburgh. Read the counts that are not there. No assault on an officer. No weapon. No destruction of property. No obstruction. Thomas Carey was never accused of hurting anybody. He was arrested more than twenty months after January 6, 2021. That is twenty months of a man in Pittsburgh waiting to find out whether the federal government was coming for him. The January 20, 2025 presidential proclamation granted full pardons for offenses related to the events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. NEEDS AUTHENTICATION: whether a pardon certificate has issued in the name of Thomas Carey.
