Stephen Roy Sexton is a Chapin, South Carolina man, from the Lake Murray area outside Columbia, whose January 6 case ran through the South Carolina federal courts for over a year. Here's what the record shows. Sexton was arrested July 19, 2023, the second South Carolina man arrested on Capitol riot charges within a week that summer, per local news coverage at the time. FACT. He was charged with obstruction of an official proceeding, destruction of government property, engaging in physical violence, and several entering and disorderly conduct counts. Sexton pleaded guilty to two of those charges: destruction of government property, and disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building. The remaining, more serious charges were dismissed as part of that plea. FACT, per the court docket. On December 16, 2024, he was sentenced to 8 months of incarceration, 12 months of supervised release, and $2,000 in restitution, plus a $50 special assessment. On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted Sexton a full pardon covering the January 6 prosecutions. FACT. The felony violence and obstruction counts prosecutors originally brought did not stick. What he was actually convicted of, by his own plea, was property destruction and disorderly conduct, a fraction of what he was first charged with. That gap between the initial charge sheet and the final plea is common across this archive, and it is worth stating every time.
