Shawn Everett Schaefer is a Placentia, California man who, on the public record built against him, never threw a punch, never carried a weapon, and never assaulted anyone at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Look at what he was actually charged with: disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building. Two misdemeanors. No civil disorder count. No obstruction count. No assault count. That is the entire universe of the case against him. He was not arrested until January 2024, three years after the fact, identified from crowd footage like hundreds of other low-level defendants swept up as federal agents worked backward from tips and social media posts. Placentia, a quiet Orange County suburb, is not a place that expected one of its own to end up in a federal case number out of Washington, D.C. Here is what this file does not show: violence, weapons, destruction, or resistance to arrest. It shows a man who walked where he should not have walked and stood where he should not have stood. That is a real offense and Schaefer is not entitled to a pass on it. But it is also nowhere close to the felony-level conduct that dominated cable news coverage of that day, and the record should say so plainly instead of letting one label cover fifteen hundred different stories. On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed a clemency proclamation covering people convicted of offenses tied to January 6, and directed dismissal of cases still pending. A misdemeanor-only case arrested in early 2024 was very likely still working through pretrial proceedings when that order came down. What exactly happened to Schaefer's case after that date has not been independently confirmed here and is marked as such below. Shawn Schaefer has not claimed this profile. No interview, no statement, no side of the story from him yet sits in the public record reviewed for this page. If that changes, this page changes with it, free, the same day he asks.
