Shannon J. Bitzer is a Tennessee man whose January 6 case, one of the most serious charge sheets in this archive, ended without a single conviction. Here's what the record shows. Tipsters told the FBI they believed Bitzer was at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Video and police body-worn camera footage allegedly show a man in a backwards red "Make America Great Again" cap at the North Doors, moving a barrier, and yelling "We want to go in the Capitol! We want to go in!" He is alleged to have held a door open for a minute, yelling "Get in patriots, get in!", before being pushed back out and joining others resisting officers trying to reclose the doors. THEIR ACCOUNT, per the FBI affidavit, not a finding by any court. Bitzer was not arrested until January 30, 2024, three years later. He was charged with civil disorder, two counts of assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, assaulting officers, entering with a deadly weapon, and disorderly conduct and violence counts, among the heaviest charge sheets in the entire Capitol breach caseload. He pleaded not guilty to every count. A jury trial was set for March 3, 2025. On February 17, 2025, before that trial ever happened, the court granted the government's motion to dismiss the entire case with prejudice. FACT, per the court docket. No plea was ever entered and no conviction of any kind exists in his record. Read that charge sheet again, then read the outcome. This is exactly the gap this archive exists to document: the most alarming-sounding charges in a press release, and a case the government itself chose to walk away from before a jury ever heard it.
