Richard Cook is a Boca Raton, Florida man who did something most January 6 defendants never did. He took his case to a jury. FACT: Richard Cook was arrested on March 9, 2023, more than two years after January 6, 2021. FACT: He pleaded not guilty to every count and went to trial. He did not take a plea deal. FACT: On May 10, 2024, a District of Columbia jury found him guilty on all counts. The government case, which the jury accepted, was that Richard Cook joined the crowd pushing against the police line in the lower west tunnel of the Capitol. FACT: On August 28, 2024, U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton sentenced him to 18 months incarceration with credit for time already served, 36 months of supervised release, $2,000 in restitution, and a $195 special assessment. FACT: On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. Richard Cook received a full pardon. A pardon is not a technicality and it is not a loophole. It is the oldest power in the Constitution and it is the final word on the case. The conviction is history. The man is free.
