Richard Zachary Ackerman was a Salem, New Hampshire man whose January 6 case was still open on the federal docket when he died in 2024. FACT: Ackerman was arrested June 20, 2023, and pleaded guilty in April 2024 to charges connected to January 6, including taking a U.S. Capitol Police helmet from the scene (DOJ; Boston Globe). FACT: local reporting from the Union Leader and Patch identifies him as a Salem, New Hampshire resident, remembered by neighbors there. FACT: Ackerman was later hospitalized in Boston following a house fire at his Salem home, and Patch identified him as the person who died in that fire. This archive keeps that record short and factual, out of respect for his family, and does not speculate beyond what local reporting has published. People search his name for his January 6 case and for what happened to him after; this record answers both, plainly, and stops where the public record stops. His January 6 case never reached a public sentencing memo or hearing transcript that this archive has located, so the record here rests on the DOJ defendant index and the local reporting cited above. He never reached a sentencing hearing on the federal charge, and the case was still pending resolution on the docket at the time of his death, per the Union Leader's court coverage. WHERE THINGS STAND: his federal January 6 case is preserved here as part of the full record. On January 20, 2025, President Trump's clemency proclamation covered the January 6 prosecutions generally; Ackerman's case had already closed with his death before that date, so the proclamation did not apply to him directly. CASE RECORD Case No. 23-mj-00129, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Charges, per DOJ and NPR's January 6 case archive: civil disorder; theft of government property. Complaint filed June 13, 2023. Arrested June 20, 2023. Pleaded guilty April 2024. This profile is unclaimed. If this is you, or your family, claiming it is free, forever.
