Peter Geoffrey Moloney is a funeral director from Bayport, New York, on the South Shore of Long Island. He owned a chain of family funeral homes. For decades his work was standing beside Suffolk County families on the worst week of their lives. That is the man. Now the record. FACT: Peter Moloney was arrested on June 7, 2023, in Bayport, New York, two and a half years after January 6, 2021. He was 58. FACT: Court documents in his case state that members of the public helped identify Moloney from videos and photographs of the Capitol riot. FACT: The government charged him with Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Certain Officers, and Assault by Striking. The allegations were that he sprayed officers with wasp killer and that he shoved a news photographer and grabbed a camera. FACT: In October 2024, Peter Geoffrey Moloney pleaded guilty to both charges. Sentencing was set for February 11, 2025. FACT: He was never sentenced. On January 21, 2025, the court granted the government's motion and dismissed the case with prejudice, following the clemency President Trump granted on January 20, 2025. WHAT THIS DOES NOT PROVE: the broader characterizations that ran in the press were never tried. What stands in the record is a guilty plea to two counts and a dismissal with prejudice before any sentence was imposed. Case record: Case 23-mj-118, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, docket dcd 268831. Complaint filed June 6, 2023. Arrested June 7, 2023. Dismissed with prejudice January 21, 2025.
