Nicole Prado
Pardoned January 6 defendant
Documented editorial-use imageNicole Prado is a graphic designer, a photography student, and a young mom from Gaithersburg, Maryland. That is not the part you have heard. You heard "January 6 defendant." Here is the rest of the record. FACT, from the defense sentencing memorandum filed in her own case: Nicole Prado is a first generation American, born in Maryland to a Bolivian family. She is the eldest of three. At thirteen she was already helping raise her younger brothers. She holds a college degree in graphic design. At the time of January 6 she was enrolled in a digital photography class at Montgomery College. She worked part time from home for her husband's construction company and was a full time mother to two small children. FACT, same filing: the letters people wrote to the court called her kind, compassionate, a natural caregiver, a loving and dedicated mother. Her own cousin wrote that she sparks joy. Now here is the detail that should stop the shouting. FACT: Nicole Prado attended President Obama's 2009 inauguration as a seventeen year old. FACT: in 2016 she rallied, phone banked, and knocked doors for Bernie Sanders. Same woman. Same country. Different year. Whatever box you were about to put her in, she does not fit in it. THEIR ACCOUNT: her attorney told the court she went to the Capitol to take photographs for a college project and was virtually silent inside, as reported by WUSA9. THE LEGAL FIGHT CHARGE ONLY at the start: four misdemeanor counts, no felony, no weapon, no allegation that she hurt anyone. FACT: she was arrested June 11, 2021 and had her initial appearance the same afternoon. FACT: charged by criminal information June 14, 2021. Arraigned and pleaded not guilty July 8, 2021. FACT: plea agreement November 22, 2021. She pleaded guilty to one count, parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building, 40 U.S.C. 5104(e)(2)(G). FACT: on February 7, 2022 she was sentenced to twelve months of probation with sixty hours of community service, a $742 fine, and $500 restitution. No prison. No home confinement beyond an initial curfew. FACT: on January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. WHAT THIS DOES NOT PROVE: nothing in this record alleges Nicole Prado struck anyone, carried anything, or destroyed anything. WHAT IT DOES PROVE: a Maryland mother with a camera and a college assignment got a federal case number. CASE RECORD Case 1:21-cr-403, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
