Nhi Ngoc Mai Le is a 27-year-old woman from Montgomery, Illinois whose own words, written two days before January 6, 2021, explain more about her than any charging document ever will. FACT: in a Facebook post cited in federal court records, Le wrote in Vietnamese about protests in Saigon years earlier being crushed and unreported, and said she never imagined seeing "the same thing happening in the United States of America, my second home and paradise." HER ACCOUNT: that's a refugee's daughter, or a refugee herself, watching what she believed was her adopted country sliding toward the thing her family fled. FACT: a tipster told the FBI Le had posted photos of herself inside the Capitol. She initially denied entering, agents say, but surveillance footage and her own Facebook photos showed otherwise, and in a second interview she admitted it. DOCUMENTED INFERENCE: her defense attorney told the court Le was not a proficient English speaker and argued she had been misled by an online Vietnamese-language "influencer" into believing the country would turn communist if the 2020 election went the other way. NEEDS AUTHENTICATION: that claim comes from her defense, not an independent source. Nhi Le pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors. FACT: the court sentenced her to 10 days in jail, a fine, and restitution, the shortest sentence in this batch. FACT: on January 20, 2025, Nhi Ngoc Mai Le received a full pardon from President Trump. A young Vietnamese American woman, raised on stories of a communist takeover, who says she believed she was watching history repeat. She served 10 days and was pardoned. That's her record. What this doesn't prove: it doesn't establish who the "influencer" was or verify her account of being misled. What it does prove: a 10-day sentence, fully served, and a full pardon.
