Matthew Huttle was a working man from northwest Indiana, one of the January 6 defendants who received a full presidential pardon on January 20, 2025, and one whose story ended in tragedy just days later. Matthew Huttle traveled to Washington on January 6, 2021, spent time on Capitol grounds, and entered the building for roughly ten minutes according to the FBI record. He was later charged, sentenced to six months of federal incarceration plus twelve months of supervised release, and served that time. On January 20, 2025, President Trump's clemency proclamation covered his case in full, a complete, unconditional pardon. Six days later, on January 26, 2025, a Jasper County, Indiana sheriff's deputy pulled Matthew Huttle over during a traffic stop. According to Indiana State Police, an altercation followed during an attempted arrest and Huttle, who was armed with a firearm, was shot and killed by the deputy. The Indiana State Police investigated. In September 2025, WISH-TV I-Team reporting confirmed the county prosecutor cleared the deputy, deeming the shooting justified. Matthew Huttle left behind family. He never got to live the life the pardon gave back to him. ## Case record Case 1:22-mj-234, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
