Mark Sami Ibrahim spent years carrying a badge for the United States government. FACT: he worked as a Special Agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, and had already given the DEA notice of his intent to resign weeks before January 6, 2021. Mark Ibrahim, of La Palma, California, was on personal leave, off duty, when he went to Washington that day. FACT: prosecutors alleged he posed for photos flashing his DEA badge and firearm outside the Capitol, in restricted outdoor areas, and climbed onto the Peace Monument to record himself talking. NEEDS AUTHENTICATION: he has never been accused of entering the Capitol building itself. The government charged him with entering a restricted area with a dangerous weapon, having a firearm on Capitol grounds, and lying to federal agents. Ibrahim pleaded not guilty across the board and fought it. FACT: on October 27, 2022, the court dismissed the false-statements count outright. His defense argued something worth saying plainly: DEA agents are trained, authorized, and often expected to carry their service weapon off duty, and Ibrahim was legally permitted to carry it in Washington, D.C.
