Luke Russell Coffee is a Dallas filmmaker, actor and former Baylor football walk-on whose January 6 case ended in dismissal. He grew up in Highland Park, just north of downtown Dallas. He walked on at Baylor as a defensive back, and when football ended he went after storytelling instead. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 2000s and landed a prime time role on NBC's Friday Night Lights in 2006. (FACT, Texas Monthly) THEIR ACCOUNT: Luke Coffee has said he pushed to the front of the police line on January 6 because people in the crowd were being crushed, among them Rosanne Boyland of Kennesaw, Georgia. "She was saying, Help! Help! And I was trying to pull her out," he told The Epoch Times. Epoch Times reporting on the Boyland footage places Coffee at the front of the line just before 4:28 p.m., hand raised, shouting "Stop!" before he was hit with pepper spray. He has said he believed God told him to stand in the gap that day. The internet named him before the government did. Images of the man in the cowboy hat and camo jacket, right arm out as if for a high five, went up on FBI posters, and online sleuths tagged him the HighFiveCowboy. (FACT, Texas Monthly) THE LEGAL FIGHT. Coffee surrendered in Dallas and was arrested 2/25/2021. He was indicted 4/28 and arraigned 5/26, where he pleaded not guilty to every count. He spent roughly 20 months on home detention before it was lifted. In December 2024, after trial in Washington, a judge found him guilty of six felony counts and one misdemeanor. About 40 days later the case was dismissed. On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions, and the conviction did not stand.
