Leander Antwione Williams is a practicing attorney, a former NFL linebacker, and a Dean's List graduate who earned a law degree after football was over. Start with the record, because every line of it is documented. FACT: Williams was born May 26, 1993 in Birmingham, Alabama. He played high school football at Lovejoy High School in Hampton, Georgia, where he earned two all region selections plus all county and all South Crescent honors. FACT: He attended Georgia Southern University from 2011 to 2015 and majored in psychology. He played 50 games with 34 starts, recording 229 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks. As a redshirt senior in 2015 he started all 13 games with 107 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks, and earned All Sun Belt honorable mention. He also made the Dean's List. Starter and scholar, at the same time. FACT: The Detroit Lions drafted Leander Antwione Williams in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, 169th overall. He played 14 games for Detroit with 27 total tackles, and spent time with the Vikings, the Seahawks, and the Panthers. In 2020 he played linebacker for the DC Defenders of the XFL. FACT: In May 2023 he graduated from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School with a Juris Doctor. He is listed as an attorney with the Mike Slocumb Law Firm, practicing out of its Birmingham, Alabama office in personal injury law: car accidents, premises liability, and negligence claims. He went from the field to the bar. Now the legal fight. FACT: Williams was arrested at his Savannah, Georgia home in November 2024, at age 31, nearly four years after January 6, 2021. He was released on a $25,000 bond and later released on his own recognizance. CHARGE ONLY: A nine count indictment alleged three felony counts of assaulting law enforcement officers, one felony civil disorder count, and misdemeanor counts including disorderly conduct. Those were allegations. Nothing more. FACT: On December 16, 2024, Leander Antwione Williams pleaded not guilty to all nine counts at an arraignment held by video before a federal judge in Washington. He did not take a deal. His next appearance was set for February 6, 2025. FACT: On January 20, 2025, President Trump issued clemency covering January 6 cases, which included directing the Attorney General to dismiss pending indictments. Williams never went to trial and was never convicted of anything arising from that day. What this does not prove: no jury ever heard the government's evidence. What it does prove: a man holding a law degree, who understood exactly what a nine count federal indictment meant, looked at it and said not guilty.
