Lawrence Ligas is a North Side Chicago activist, a Portage Park election judge, and a man who told the federal government no when it offered him a deal. Most people take the plea. He did not. He said he would fight it. Then he fought it. Then the pardon came, and he called it what he had said it was the whole time. WHO HE IS FACT: Lawrence Ligas, also known as Larry Ligas, is from the North Side of Chicago, Illinois. ABC7 Chicago, CBS Chicago, and WGN covered him as a Chicago activist. FACT: While awaiting trial in the January 6 case, Lawrence Ligas worked as an election judge in Portage Park. Block Club Chicago reported it in November 2024. FACT: He has run for the United States Senate from Illinois on a platform he describes as fighting Illinois corrupt politicians. His campaign site is ligas4usa.com. THE LEGAL FIGHT, AND THIS IS THE PART THAT MATTERS FACT: Arrested December 1, 2021. Information filed December 13, 2021. CHARGE ONLY: Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds; Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds; Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building; Parading, Demonstrating or Picketing in a Capitol Building. FACT: NBC Chicago reported that Lawrence Ligas was one of two Chicago men who rejected plea deals in their January 6 cases. FACT: He told the ABC7 I-Team he planned to fight the charges rather than settle. FACT: ABC7 Chicago later reported a new felony charge was brought against him while the case was pending. FACT: His attorney went on WGN Radio 720 to discuss the client and the case in public, on the record. FACT: On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. Lawrence Ligas was pardoned. He told FOX 32 Chicago it was full vindication. FACT: The Center Square reported he was weighing a lawsuit against the prosecutors afterward. WHAT THIS DOES NOT PROVE It does not prove what happened inside the building that day. Charges are charges, and his were never tested by a jury. WHAT IT DOES PROVE He was offered the easy exit and he refused it. Three years of his life ran through a federal docket while he kept showing up to serve as an election judge in his own neighborhood. Show me the man who quit. It was not this one.
