Julio Cesar Chang gave this country two careers before January 6 ever happened. FACT: the U.S. Marine Corps confirmed to NPR that Chang served nearly two decades on active duty, reaching the rank of gunnery sergeant, and deployed to Afghanistan. FACT: the Broward County Sheriff's Office confirmed he worked there from 1991 to 2005, retiring at the rank of lieutenant. Julio Chang is a Marine veteran and a retired law enforcement lieutenant from Aventura, Florida. That's not filler. That's twenty-plus years of a life spent in uniform, two different uniforms, before a single day in Washington put him in federal court. FACT: prosecutors alleged Chang's cellphone and surveillance footage placed him inside the Capitol, including the Rotunda, and that he posted photos of himself outside the building on Facebook. THEIR ACCOUNT: when reporters showed up at his home, Chang told them, "I appreciate you coming to my house and visiting me, but I would rather remain silent and let my attorney handle the whole process." A disciplined answer from a disciplined career. FACT: there is no record of any violence or property destruction charge against him. He pleaded guilty to one count, Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building. The rest of the charges were dismissed. The court sentenced him to probation and home detention, not prison. FACT: on January 20, 2025, Julio Cesar Chang received a full pardon from President Trump. A retired Marine gunnery sergeant. A retired sheriff's lieutenant. Julio Chang gave Broward County and the Marine Corps decades of service, then gave the court a guilty plea to one misdemeanor, and the President gave him a pardon. That's the whole record, in order. What this doesn't prove: it doesn't establish his politics or his intentions that day. What it does prove: two decades of documented service, one misdemeanor plea, no violence charge, and a full pardon. CASE RECORD Case No. 1:21-cr-703, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
