Joshua Curtis Coker is a 45-year-old man from Oregon, Ohio, a working town on Lake Erie just east of Toledo. The FBI did not find Joshua Coker because a witness named him. They found him by sweeping cell phones and running faces through software. Read how it worked, because it is in the court file. HOW THEY FOUND HIM FACT: In late 2021, the FBI used a search warrant to pull cell phone location data for devices that had been inside the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and specifically filtered for numbers carrying Toledo, Ohio area codes. (Source: federal court records, summarized in the NPR January 6 case database.) FACT: That geographic phone sweep pointed at Joshua Coker. The bureau then used facial recognition technology to identify him among the crowd. (Source: same court records; WTOL Toledo.) FACT: Surveillance footage places him entering at 2:13 p.m. and exiting at 2:54 p.m. Forty-one minutes. A geofence warrant and a face-matching algorithm. That is how a man in Oregon, Ohio got a federal case number. Every American ought to read that paragraph twice. THE MAN AND THE TOWN FACT: Joshua Curtis Coker was 45 and living in Oregon, Ohio, Lucas County, when he was charged. (Source: NPR January 6 case database, compiled from federal court records.) FACT: He pleaded guilty to ONE count, Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds.
