Joshua Abate was on active duty in the United States Marine Corps. FACT: He served as a special communication signals analyst with the Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion — the Marine unit that works alongside the NSA at Fort Meade — and was assigned to the Marine Corps Information Operations Center at Quantico, Virginia. (Military.com; Marine Corps Times) That is not a job you fall into. It takes a clearance, a clean record, and a brain. FACT: He pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count — parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building. Not assault. Not a weapon. The lowest charge on the board. FACT: On September 13, 2023, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes sentenced him to probation and community service. No prison time. (Military.com; The Hill) FACT: On January 20, 2025, the presidential proclamation granting pardons and commutations for offenses relating to January 6, 2021 issued a full pardon covering his conviction. NEEDS AUTHENTICATION: Reporting has described the Marine Corps moving to strip his access to classified information. We have not reviewed the underlying military records, so we are not stating that as fact. He was 22 years old on January 6, 2021, and he wore the uniform of his country.
