Joseph Irwin served this country in uniform, and he served Hardin County, Kentucky, as a sheriff's deputy. He is 40 years old, from Cecilia, Kentucky, a small town outside Elizabethtown. Veteran. Former deputy. Both on the record, both sourced to local news coverage that ran before and after his arrest. Federal prosecutors charged him with some of the most serious counts on the January 6 docket: obstruction of an official proceeding, entering a restricted building with a dangerous weapon, and entering the floor of Congress itself. Irwin did not take a plea deal. He pleaded not guilty across the board and took his case all the way to a bench trial. On May 14, 2024, the judge found him guilty on every count.
