Jonathanpeter Allen Klein is a young man from Pendleton, Oregon who walked into the Capitol beside his own brother and spent the next four years inside a federal case. Eastern Oregon. Ranch country. A long way from a Washington, D.C. courtroom. FACT: Jonathanpeter Allen Klein of Pendleton, Oregon was arrested on March 23, 2021 in Heppner, Oregon, in Morrow County. He was one of the earliest January 6 arrests. He was initially detained and held, then released on May 19, 2021 after a bond hearing. FACT: his brother, Matthew Leland Klein, was charged in the same case. OPB reported Jonathanpeter as 24 and Matthew as 27 at the time of their 2024 pleas. FACT: Jonathanpeter Klein was represented by Michelle M. Sweet. The case was before Judge Randolph Moss. WHAT THE GOVERNMENT ALLEGED, and this archive labels it plainly PROSECUTION ALLEGATION, never tried, never proven: federal prosecutors asserted in court filings that both Klein brothers were members of the Proud Boys, that they were seen at Oregon rallies in fall 2020, and that on January 6 they helped force open a secure door on the Capitol's north side. Prosecutors wrote that both brothers had shown "a preparedness and willingness, if not eagerness, to engage in violence." That is the government's characterization in a sentencing posture. It is argument, not a verdict. Jonathanpeter Allen Klein was never convicted of conspiracy, never convicted of obstruction, and never convicted of destruction of government property, though he was originally charged with all three. WHAT HE ACTUALLY PLEADED TO FACT: Klein pleaded guilty to two counts and two only. Civil disorder, and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. The conspiracy count, the obstruction of an official proceeding count, the destruction of government property count and the remaining misdemeanors were resolved out. FACT: on December 2, 2024 he was sentenced to 9 months of incarceration, 36 months of supervised release, a $200 special assessment, and $3,000 in restitution. FACT: on January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. Jonathanpeter Allen Klein received a full pardon. He waited three years and eight months between arrest and plea. Then he got nine months. Then the case was wiped. NEEDS AUTHENTICATION: American Gulag records no donation campaign for Klein. This archive has found no reporting on his trade, his service, or his family in Pendleton, Oregon beyond his brother.
