John Douglas Wright
Pardoned January 6 defendant
John Douglas Wright is a Canton, Ohio small business owner. He owns charter buses. His whole trade is getting people where they need to go and getting them home safe. FACT: Reporting at the time of his plea identified John Douglas Wright as 55 years old and the owner of a charter bus company in Canton, Ohio. FACT: Wright organized two of his own buses and carried roughly 100 people from Northeast Ohio to Washington, D.C. Think about what that actually is. A man with a bus company and a phone list got a hundred of his neighbors to the nation's capital so they could be heard. Political parties pay consultants six figures to do what this Ohio bus owner did off his own lot. Here is what the record shows. FACT: John Douglas Wright was arrested May 3, 2021. FACT: He was indicted May 5, 2021. FACT: A superseding indictment was filed December 1, 2021. FACT: On August 2, 2022 he pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding. FACT: Charging documents state that inside the building Wright walked through the Rotunda, took video, posted to Facebook Live, and left. FACT: The government also put social media posts attributed to Wright in front of the court and used them to argue for a stiffer sentence. He was never charged with any threat offense arising from them. DOCUMENTED INFERENCE: Wright's felony count, obstruction of an official proceeding, is the same charge the Supreme Court narrowed in Fischer v. United States in June 2024. Hundreds of January 6 cases rested on that statute before the Court cut it back. FACT: On January 20, 2025, the presidential proclamation granted pardons for offenses relating to the events at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. WHAT THIS DOES NOT PROVE: John Douglas Wright was not charged with assaulting an officer. He was not charged with damaging property. He was not charged with carrying a weapon. WHAT IT DOES PROVE: a working man from Canton put his own equipment behind his own convictions, then answered for the day in open court.
