John Lolos is the man a federal judge called a pawn. Not a mastermind. Not a militia. A pawn. Those are not my words. Those are the words of a United States District Judge, said out loud, on the record, at sentencing on November 19, 2021. CNN put it in a headline: a federal judge said the people who summoned Americans to Washington bear responsibility for what happened, and told John Lolos he had been used. WUSA9 reported the same thing. So did BuzzFeed News. Read that again and let it sit. The court that sentenced John Lolos said in open court that he was being used by people who never faced a courtroom. And then the court sentenced him anyway. Fourteen days. That is the whole due process story of January 6 in one paragraph. The man who showed up got a number. The people the judge said were responsible got a microphone. WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS FACT: John Lolos was arrested January 28, 2021 and charged by criminal information on March 23, 2021, per the DOJ record. FACT: He was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to counts 1 through 4 on March 29, 2021. FACT: He pleaded guilty to count 4. FACT: He was sentenced November 19, 2021 to 14 days of incarceration and $500 restitution, per the DOJ record and Courthouse News. FACT: At that sentencing the judge described him as a pawn and faulted those who called supporters to Washington, per CNN, WUSA9, and BuzzFeed News. FACT: On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. THE LEGAL FIGHT Charges, per the DOJ record: Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds; Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds; Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building; Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building. He pleaded to one count. He got 14 days and $500. He is not a violent offender in this record and the government did not charge him as one. WHAT THIS DOES NOT PROVE: Nothing here says the judge excused what John Lolos did. The court sentenced him. It says the court, on its own, put the responsibility somewhere higher and said so publicly. WHAT IT DOES PROVE: The record of this case contains a federal judge saying the accountability did not reach the people who set it in motion. That is in the transcript. That is the record. The record does not lie. THE CASE RECORD Case 1:21-cr-243, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Arrested 1/28. Charged via criminal information 3/23. Arraigned 3/29.
