James Wyman is a 68-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Durham, North Carolina. Read that again. A 68-year-old veteran. Before he was ever a defendant, James Wyman put on the uniform and served this country. Court records say Wyman walked into the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, through the Senate Wing door at 2:22 p.m. and left a little over an hour later. A sentencing memo filed on his own behalf in federal court told the judge what the government's press office never will: that James Wyman served in the United States Army. That single count, entering a restricted building, is the whole case against him. No assault charge. No weapons charge. No conspiracy. One count, entering and remaining, and a plea to it. The FBI didn't come for James Wyman right away either. He was arrested July 24, 2023, more than two years after that afternoon. He pleaded guilty and, on January 31, 2024, was sentenced to 30 days incarceration, 12 months supervised release, $500 restitution, a $25 special assessment, and 60 hours of community service. A veteran in his late sixties, doing community service for a misdemeanor entry charge. On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted James Wyman a full pardon. Ryan Nichols has said it before: this record does not lie, and it does not hide the good with the bad. James Wyman served his country in the Army, made a decision that afternoon in Washington he'll answer for on his own terms, and received clemency from the President of the United States. Same county courthouse rules apply here that apply everywhere else on this site: show the record, let people judge it themselves.
