James Beeks is a working stage actor out of Florida. He played Judas in the national touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar. He performs as a Michael Jackson tribute artist under the name James T. Justis. And on July 11, 2023, a federal judge acquitted him. All counts. Not guilty. ACQUITTED. FACT, per CNN, CBS News, NBC News, WUSA9, The Hill and Courthouse News. Read that again, because it almost never happened in these cases. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, the same judge who presided over the Oath Keepers seditious conspiracy trials, heard the government put on its case against James Beeks and ruled he was not guilty. Courthouse News called it a rare move. FACT. WHO HE IS A professional performer. A touring musical theater actor. A man who made his living on a stage in front of paying audiences eight shows a week. FACT, per CNN, The Washington Post and NBC News. Federal investigators tracked him by buying tickets to two of his stage performances and by comparing photographs of his ear to a singing video he had posted on YouTube. FACT, per CNN. The government sat in the audience of a Jesus Christ Superstar production to build a case, and then lost that case in open court. THE LEGAL FIGHT Arrested November 24, 2021 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin while on tour, on charges in a criminal complaint. FACT, per the DOJ docket and FOX6 Milwaukee. Indicted December 1, 2021 in the broader multi defendant case. Superseding indictment returned January 12, 2022. Superseding indictment returned June 22, 2022. FACT, per the DOJ docket. Prosecutors alleged he conspired with Oath Keepers members to obstruct the certification. Reporting states he had purchased a one year membership roughly two weeks before January 6. CHARGE ONLY. Those allegations were never proven, because he was acquitted. July 11, 2023: acquitted of all charges after a bench trial before Judge Amit Mehta. FACT. On January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. James Beeks did not need it. He already had a judgment of acquittal.
