Anthony Sargent is a BMX track operator from St. Augustine, Florida. Before his name showed up on a federal docket, it showed up on a race schedule. He has run the track at First Coast BMX in St. Johns County since 2013. THEIR ACCOUNT: Sargent has said cycling turned his life around after a sedentary stretch, that he lost roughly 130 pounds on a bike, and that "BMX saved my life." DOCUMENTED INFERENCE: coverage of his life describes his children as the ones who told him to get back on the bike. That is the part the wire copy left out. A man who got himself healthy on two wheels and then spent a decade running the gate for other people's kids on the same track. THE LEGAL FIGHT. FACT: Anthony Sargent was arrested on September 21, 2021. FACT: he was charged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia with Civil Disorder, Destruction of Government Property, Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds, Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds, Engaging in Physical Violence in a Restricted Building or Grounds, Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building, and an Act of Physical Violence in the Capitol Grounds or Buildings. FACT: he pleaded guilty. FACT: on December 15, 2023, Judge Dabney Friedrich sentenced him to 60 months of incarceration, 36 months of supervised release, $2,980 in restitution and a $220 special assessment. FACT: that sentence ran 14 months above what federal prosecutors themselves recommended, which is uncommon. THEIR ACCOUNT: at sentencing Sargent told the court, "I wish I hadn't done it. I'm not a violent person. I have massive respect for law enforcement." FACT: the judge rejected that account on the record. FACT: on January 20, 2025, President Trump granted clemency covering the January 6 prosecutions. FACT: Anthony Sargent was released on January 21, 2025.
