Alan William Byerly is a Berks County, Pennsylvania man facing one of the more serious January 6 felony cases on record. The record here is heavy, and we are not going to dress it up. He is from farm and small-town country between Reading and Allentown. That is home, and that is where his family and neighbors know him. (per public records and local reporting) FACT: Byerly entered the restricted Capitol grounds on January 6, 2021. Court reporting describes him striking police officers and an Associated Press photographer, including with a stun gun, during the breach. (WITF; The Inquirer) FACT: He pleaded guilty July 25, 2022, to charges including assault on a federal officer and civil disorder. On October 21, 2022, he was sentenced to 34 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and $2,000 restitution. (DOJ; court record) FACT: On January 20, 2025, Alan Byerly received a full pardon under the presidential clemency proclamation. The sentence stands as the historical record of what happened; the pardon changes what the government can do about it now, not what the record says occurred. WHERE THINGS STAND: A felony assault case, a 34-month sentence, and a full pardon. Byerly's supporters have followed the case through the American Gulag project, which tracks January 6 defendants and their sentences nationwide.
