Mitch McConnell Finally Speaks. Here's the Real Update.

I said it earlier today: if McConnell's team came out with a real, verified, on-the-record statement, I'd report it straight. This is that.

The statement

C-SPAN posted it. Multiple outlets confirmed it independently. This is not the fake newspaper photo I called out this morning. This is a real, on-the-record note from McConnell's office to Kentucky constituents.

What he actually said

FACT: McConnell says he took a fall that left him briefly unconscious, which is what put him in the hospital. FACT: His doctors confirmed no broken bones, no concussion, no heart attack, no stroke, no tumors, no hemorrhages. FACT: He developed a mild case of pneumonia during his hospital stay. FACT: He has since been moved to a rehabilitation center and is working to regain his strength. FACT: His doctors have told him not to return to the Senate floor to vote yet, but he says he's been working with staff and colleagues on legislation and constituent services throughout. FACT: He reiterated that his decision to retire in January was, in part, about being honest with himself about what the job demands.

Where that leaves things

This morning I told you the "proof of life" photo everybody was passing around was fake, and it was. Then I told you the silence itself was the problem, and I wasn't going to accept a phone call to a colleague as a real answer. Now his office has put out an actual statement, on the record, with real medical detail instead of vague reassurance.

That's what I asked for. That's what Kentucky was owed. Credit where it's due — this is what transparency is supposed to look like, and it's a month later than it should have been, but it's here.

The bottom line

Source it or don't use it. That cuts both ways. I called the fake photo fake. I'm calling this real, real. The record spoke, finally, and I'm not going to pretend it didn't just because it doesn't fit a more dramatic story. Praying for a full recovery.
