Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died Saturday night into Sunday morning, July 12, 2026. He was 71.
What happened
His office says he died after a brief and sudden illness. Emergency personnel responded to a cardiac arrest call at his home on Capitol Hill Saturday night. A preliminary medical finding lists the cause as aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease — in plain English, a rupture of the aorta caused by hardened arteries.
He died just hours after returning from a trip to Ukraine, where he had met with President Zelenskyy.
Graham had served in the Senate since 2002, chaired the Senate Budget Committee, and was one of the most recognized voices in the chamber on defense and foreign policy. He was in the middle of seeking a fifth six-year term this November.
President Trump led tributes, calling him a "true American Patriot."
Where I land on this
I didn't agree with Lindsey Graham on everything. Most people who know my politics know that. But a man is dead, his family is grieving tonight, and South Carolina lost a senator with almost twenty-five years in that seat. That's not a moment for score-settling. That's a moment to be honest about what happened and let the man's own record speak for the rest.
Seventy-one. Home from a work trip, and gone within hours. It doesn't matter what side of the aisle you're on — that's a hard reminder that none of us are promised tomorrow. I don't say that as a cliché. I've buried enough of my own plans, my own timelines, my own certainty about what's next, to know it's true.
Prayers for his family and his staff tonight.
What I do know
FACT: Graham died the night of July 11 into July 12, 2026, per his office and multiple outlets. FACT: Preliminary cause of death is listed as aortic dissection. FACT: He returned from Ukraine hours before his death. RYAN STATEMENT: I'm not going to pretend I agreed with him on everything, and I'm not going to pretend this is the day to relitigate that. Rest in peace.
